I started college because I thought that's where I was supposed to go.  I applied to one college, I got in, went, and realized it wasn't for me.  I had customers so I stopped going to class.

I’m scared to death of slowly dying throughout life. Of living a life of complacency until death. The only way to not be handcuffed and jailed by all the rules set by the people around you is to fight for the disobedience that will set you free. Mediocrity follows the rules. Unfortunately, both success and failure disobey them.

Ever feel like that?

How could Dell, for example, possibly copy Apple’s operations when they currently classify “Design & Performance” and “Thin & Powerful” as separate laptop categories?

I remember when Steve was my neighbor in Woodside, Calif., and he had no furniture. It struck me that there wasn't furniture good enough for Steve in the world. He'd rather have nothing if he couldn't have perfection.

And I jokingly said, "The difference between me and Steve is that I'm willing to live with the best the world can provide. With Steve that's not always good enough." And if you look at how he tackles building a phone, or building a laptop, he really is in pursuit of this technical and aesthetic perfection. And he just won't compromise.

But he's never been motivated by money.

I have never been a fan of Larry Ellison. Ever. But I love what he says about Jobs.

Point and shoot is an attitude, an approach to photography; it is not – nor to my mind should it be – a category of cameras.

The frustrating thing is that there isn't any way to actually see the full title without clicking through to the album.

Annoying

Sun, 08 May 2011 16:25:00 -0700 If you're in BC and think that squashing HST is a good idea - Read This http://tumble.humandoing.net/if-youre-in-bc-and-think-that-squashing-hst-i http://tumble.humandoing.net/if-youre-in-bc-and-think-that-squashing-hst-i
But harmonizing provincial and federal sales taxes is undeniably the right way to go. It’s simple and efficient, and made fair via targeted credits and rebates for low-income earners. The overwhelming weight of economic research shows that a broadly based value-added tax, such as the HST, is the least damaging way for government to raise the revenue it needs for such things as schools, roads and health care.

No one likes playing taxes, but moving back to a separate PST and GST model for BC is a downright dumb idea. Also, do the math people. If you have 2 separate taxes on your bill, last I checked 5% + 7% still equals 12%.

Interesting and/or thought-provoking and/or controversial words from Douglas Coupland about what the next 10 years looks like. More in quip / point form than article or essay.

Remember travel agents? Remember how they just kind of vanished one day?

That's where all the other jobs that once made us middle-class are going – to that same, magical, class-killing, job-sucking wormhole into which travel-agency jobs vanished, never to return.

Sun, 03 Oct 2010 07:05:00 -0700 The Sad Truth About Television http://tumble.humandoing.net/the-sad-truth-about-television http://tumble.humandoing.net/the-sad-truth-about-television
When TV was invented it was thought to be a great opportunity, a great teaching tool for quickly reaching the masses. However, ironically, it turned out that TV was much better employed to keep people from learning. This fits perfectly with the focus on specialization. During the day, professionals attend to their jobs. During the evenings, they vegetate in front of their TVs, thereby preventing them from learning anything, and this effectively keeps them in their jobs. Actually, the closer you get to middle class values and neighborhoods, the greater the preponderance of silent streets; all you see in the evening are empty streets with a faint blue hue emanating from behind the curtains of every house.
